summer cocktails.

it's hard to drink anything but gin or beer or prosecco in the summer. but we've got a ton of bottles in the bourbon/whiskey/scotch family. and some rum. preparing for our caribbean-themed belmont-stakes-watching party, we consumed a handful of cuba libres. that is, rum + coke + tons of lime. much unlike the ever-popular rum + coke of high school, this one is drinkable and doesn't taste too sweet or leave a sugary feel on your teeth.

however, the drink of summer 2012 is probably bourbon + limonata. i threw a couple of these together (with the oversized ice) the other night for me and casey and they were really delicious. and for all occasions, not just summer.

dubliners.

OMG. have i mentioned the demise of the dublin dr pepper? it's over. totally over. as in, it is no longer being manufactured. (although apparently there is a fight but i think it is pretty hard to beat coca cola.)

let's talk about a love. a soda love. made with imperial sugar. from sugar land, for christsakes. a delicious, delicious treat without the high-fructose corn syrup i detest. and now, it's over. oh my holy hell.

hey, hermano.

what happens when you stay with baby brother for thanksgiving? a six-pack of imperial sugar dr pepper in glass bottles. always the best; i think i drank three during my visit.
*my pet monster obviously likes it, too.

maybe it will continue forever and ever, and all sodas will follow suit. big wishes.

colbert + nestle = madness.

the second video in a week. insanity.

this is awesome:
stephen colbert and marion nestle and a sugar crisis.

i am also now questioning my obsession with high-fructose corn syrup and the fact that i came of age in a town called sugar land. coincidence? maybe.

crazy sugar.

we are in the midst of eating what i call the crazy sugar. it looks like dirt and tastes like earth. what is it, you ask? officially, it is unrefined whole cane sugar. it is not my favorite.

so i am using agave nectar in my coffee, which i love love love.

damn splenda.

bad news day for splenda. apparently, it "contributes to obesity, destroys 'good' intestinal bacteria and prevents prescription drugs from being absorbed," says the new york times.

the research was done by the sugar lobbyists. so there's that.

i would rather eat sugar any day. preferably organic. not bleached.
it's best to eat things that occur in nature. overall. really.
