a pretty amazing habit.

so, casey has started bringing bagels with him from DC, usually a bunch of everything bagels for him and some rye or pumpernickel or black-and-white for me. i really don't eat any bagels otherwise.

sunday morning: toasted bagel with goat cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, and hard-boiled egg; sliced carrots (as usual), and a mix of sauteed greens--cabbage, spinach, and collards--with onions, garlic, raisins, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper. it was actually quite spicy. in the best way.

and a second photo because it was just so beautiful. and delectable.

days twelve through fifteen.

day twelve: vimala's with april and adam. i mean, we actually ordered almost everything on the menu: sag paneer, naan, vegetarian thali, beers, rose lassi, tandoori things, salady things. i can't remember what it all was. besides delicious.

day thirteen: i was totally off-course by this point but i swear it's not my fault. casey and i went to raleigh for a birthday party and some bowling (in which i kicked his ass, which is mostly what matters). we eventually retired to the home of the birthday boy and drank the MOST delectable whiskey-and-gingers (maybe with some very strong, very gingery ginger ale or beer) and ate lilly's pizza, which is always mind-blowing. i mean, there are potatoes on the damn thing. holy hot bananas.
day fourteen: we were running off to see lambchop at motorco, so i threw all sorts of vegetables in the skillet--bell peppers, chard, onions, garlic, cabbage, eggplant--as well as chickpeas and some sort of indian curry sauce and pumpkin seeds. this was incredibly fast and totally fulfilling.

day fifteen: so maybe it's not dinner, but i made the best breakfast that i've made in a while. and i swear it's because i PERFECTLY FRIED EGGS in butter and there were delicious, delicious bagels (pumpernickel with sesame seeds!) and tomatoes and cheese and i swear it was stupidly messy and awesome. and worthy of photographs.
dinner was not worthy of photographing but consisted of rice noodles in a nutty, spicy sauce (made from peanut butter, tahini, lemon + lime, salt + braggs, sriracha, garlic), with carrots, onions, bok choy, bell pepper, and garlic in sesame oil. and some homemade chocolate ice cream, my new nemesis (i keep mistiming it).

the list on the fridge is growing with ideas and items for purchase. more to come.

two days.

two mornings of bagels. the second, at la bagel delight, ended with the italian rainbow cookie or tri-color pastry, which casey had never had before. it's an almond extract-laden cake surrounded by chocolate. of course michelle had to make sure he had one immediately. she's a good one, even if she thought it made sense to move to LA.
the shake shack 'shroom burger: a huge mushroom stuffed with melty cheese and deep fried and then put on a soft bun with special sauce of who-knows-what. we ate ours with fries and a rootbeer on a lovely upper west side bench while doing some good people-watching. mainly kid-watching. those museum-going kids are funny ones.

yes, we had already consumed the meal when i snapped this photo. we'd also been awake since 4am.
fancy water fountains that TALK TO YOU on the highline. we received advice on hydrating and skin care and social anxiety.

it was imperative that i consumed a people's pop on that hot hot hot day. i ate mine so fast i cannot remember what flavor it was (it was pink and delicious), but i know casey had a blueberry-chai. holy hell. i am going to have to step my pop-making.

aim high.

2 days, 2 bagels.
if i could have consumed more, i probably would have. i love that this ess-a-bagel has the sesame seeds on the bottom. what happened? who knows? it was fucking delicious.
bagel day #2 included a jaunt to my favorite coffee truck for a big mud mocha. i lucked out on that one, staying in my borrowed pied-à-terre on 13th street.

from new york.

yelena came to visit (many posts to come) and brought bagels for me and shira. we have been dying for some; they sort of exist here but they are not close to real. weird and fluffy and kinda like the frozen ones. so, shira came over and we devoured them.
additionally, she brought apples from her upstate apple adventure. baby ones. yes.
